Light Ragaz: Inside the Tamina Gorge & its Famous Thermal Springs
Tucked away in the Heidiland region of eastern Switzerland lies a dramatic natural wonder that feels like a portal to another world: the Tamina Gorge (Taminaschlucht). For centuries, this deep, narrow canyon has drawn travelers with its roaring waters and mystical healing springs.
But for six unforgettable years, it also became the stage for one of the most spectacular multimedia art installations in the world: Light Ragaz.
Whether you are a nature lover, a history or art buff, or a fan of cutting-edge technology, here is the fascinating story of how a raw, craggy abyss became the world's largest natural projection screen - and exactly what it was like to journey through it…
Bad Ragaz: Switzerland's Premier Wellness Oasis
To understand the magic of the gorge, you first have to discover the town that bears its name. Nestled at the foot of the Alps in the Rhine Valley, Bad Ragaz is the epitome of Swiss alpine charm and luxury wellness.
Long before it became a hotspot for modern travelers, Bad Ragaz was a quiet farming village. Everything changed when the thermal waters of the nearby gorge were successfully piped down to the town in 1840.
Almost overnight, it transformed it into a prestigious international health resort. High society, royalty, and famous figures - including author Johanna Spyri, who wrote parts of her world-famous children's book Heidi here - flocked to the town to "take the cure."
Today, Bad Ragaz perfectly blends historic opulence with natural beauty. The town is famous for its sprawling, manicured spa gardens, the public Tamina Therme thermal baths, and the ultra-luxury Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.
Beyond wellness, it is a vibrant cultural hub, famously hosting Bad Ragartz - one of Europe's largest open-air sculpture triennials, which turns the entire town into a living art gallery. It was this rich intersection of art and water that made Bad Ragaz the perfect birthplace for a groundbreaking light festival.
Raw Beauty of the Tamina Gorge
Just a short distance from the manicured town center lies its wild counterpart. Shaped over thousands of years by the relentless Tamina River, the Tamina Gorge is a dark, cavernous fissure with jagged cliff faces towering 80 meters (260 feet) high.
Walking into the gorge is an incredible sensory contrast to the sunny valley below. The air grows instantly cooler, the damp rock walls glisten, and the echoing roar of the rushing river creates an atmosphere that is equal parts humbling and mysterious (& dangerous in winter).
Secret of the Thermal Springs
Deep within this cavernous gloom lies the beating heart of the region's fame: the natural thermal spring. Discovered in 1242 by hunters, the spring gushes out 36.5 degrees C (97.7 degrees F) water at a rate of millions of liters per day.
In the early days, experiencing these healing waters was a dangerous feat. Medieval patients were lowered down the terrifying cliff faces into the dark canyon on ropes, staying in the cavern for days at a time.
The gorge's reputation reached a turning point in 1535, when the legendary Renaissance physician and alchemist Paracelsus became the first doctor to scientifically document the spring's therapeutic properties.
Today, visitors can still walk deep into the gorge to see the Quellgrotte (spring cavern) where the steaming water violently bursts from the earth before it is sent down to feed the luxury spas in the town.
Step-by-Step: Light Ragaz Experience
In 2017, organizers decided to merge the gorge's ancient mystique with futuristic technology, launching Light Ragaz. Using cutting-edge 3D pixel mapping, artists transformed a one-kilometer stretch of the damp, uneven canyon walls into a colossal, living canvas.
What made this event truly remarkable was its dual appeal: while many of the interactive exhibits and tunnel activities were fantastic for kids, the grand outdoor spectacle offered a highly sophisticated, deeply artistic sound & light show that mesmerized adults & art enthusiasts.
It wasn't just a light show; it was an unfolding, multi-sensory process that bridged the luxury of the town with the wildness of the canyon:
1. The Pre-Show Ritual:
The evening typically began at a lively bar in the center of Bad Ragaz, where guests gathered to check in, trade tickets for timed entry wristbands, and enjoy a vibrant pre-show drink.
2. The Gorge Bus Ride:
From the town center, visitors boarded a designated shuttle bus. The vehicle wound along a narrow, cliff-hugging road, offering a beautiful, dramatic evening ride directly alongside the roaring river into the deepening gorge.
Along the way, the bus passed directly underneath the Taminabruecke - Europe's largest arch bridge, spanning gracefully high overhead. Passengers caught glimpses of a crashing waterfall cascading down the sheer cliffs, alongside amazing weirs engineered to harness the fast-flowing, churning water of the river below.
3. Exploring Altes Bad Pfaefers:
The bus dropped passengers off at Altes Bad Pfaefers, Switzerland's oldest preserved Baroque bathhouse. Here, guests embarked on a self-guided tour winding through multiple floors of the historic, atmospheric buildings to absorb the history of early spa culture - seeing the sunken baths being a particular highlight.
4. The Social Hub:
Stepping outside the historic walls, visitors entered a cozy drinks tent. Lit up to match the night's energy, this stop allowed guests to grab a warm beverage or a local beer, setting a social mood before entering the dark canyon beyond.
5. Into the Tunnels:
The transition into the heart of the experience began with a walk to the imposing entrance tunnels cut directly into the rock.
6. Chasing the Source:
Once inside, visitors followed a long pathway lined with a series of interactive exhibits. These tactile, playful installations - like walls that rippled with color when touched or digital spirits that danced across the stone - were incredibly engaging for children, turning the deep caverns into an imaginative underground playground. The trail guided guests all the way to the raw thermal source deep in the cave.
7. The Grand Loop:
After reaching the end of the hot springs, the journey looped back out through the open-air gorge itself. This was the spectacular grand finale: a walk flanked by towering 80-meter cliffs entirely blanketed by an amazing synchronized sound and light show.
While the kids marvelled at the scale, adults were treated to a poetic, avant-garde audio-visual gallery - pairing complex, abstract pixel-mapping with sweeping ambient soundscapes that turned raw nature into a thought-provoking, high-art masterpiece.
Evolution of the Themes (2017–2023)
Over its six-year run, Light Ragaz kept audiences coming back by reinventing its visual theme every season:
2017: The Alchemist's Laboratory – Paid homage to Paracelsus, transforming the rock tunnels into a magical, glowing workshop that brought local history to life.
2018: Aquarell – A fluid, dreamlike spectacle celebrating watercolor art and the untamed power of the thermal waters.
2019: Goldrush – An interactive adventure combining the night walk with a massive regional treasure hunt.
2020: Cancelled due to COVID. Instead they launched a free alternative village experience called "Lichterglanz" (The Glow of Lights).
2021: The Elemental Spirits – Featured four spirits (Water, Earth, Air & Fire) and allowed guests to scan their faces and project them onto the gargantuan canyon cliffs - this was great!
2022–2023: Happiness – The grand finale was a deeply philosophical, emotional journey exploring humanity’s pursuit of joy, encouraging visitors to find happiness in the present moment. I didn't like this one so much, more for the kids…
Beyond the Gorge: a Town Wrapped in Art
If you visited the region during the Light Ragaz season, the artistic magic did not stop at the canyon exit. The town of Bad Ragaz itself transformed into a sprawling open-air museum. As you walked through the charming streets, public parks, and historic resort grounds, you were surrounded by a breathtaking collection of oversized art statues and contemporary sculptures.
From whimsical and playful figures to striking avant-garde masterpieces, these open-air installations allowed visitors to extend their artistic journey long before sunset, perfectly mirroring the creative energy flowing through the nearby gorge.
The Legacy Left Behind
While the projectors of Light Ragaz officially turned off in late 2023 so organizers could focus on new regional art projects, the magic of the Tamina Gorge remains untouched.
Today, you can still catch the public PostBus Route 453 during the daytime from May to October to explore the dramatic cavern, see the engineering marvel of the Taminabruecke from above or below, visit the historic old bathhouse museum, and feel the steam rising from the natural springs.
It stands as a powerful reminder that whether illuminated by high-tech lasers or the simple midday sun, Bad Ragaz and its mystical gorge remain one of Switzerland's truly unforgettable treasures…
